O Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA), que atualmente desenvolve um Inventário florestal e estuda as possíveis alterações climáticas e ecológicas na região onde está sendo construída a hidrelétrica de Itaipu, também realizará o mesmo trabalho na área que deverá ser inundada pela obra da hidrelétrica de Balvina, na BR-174. O trabalho será concluído em 1985, e incluirá um levantamento frutífero da região.
